I have practiced Adoption Law since 1987 and I have been a volunteer advocate for adoption and fostering issues across British Columbia throughout my career. I was selected as one of six BC lawyers to assist in the creation of the Adoption Act in 1996. I have acted for hopeful couples and families as with as birth parents seeking assurance on the successful planning and placement of their child.
A more common form of adoption is often described as a step parent adoption where one of the married couple is not the biological parent of one or more of the children in the family. This involves very sensitive issues related to the biological parent who is divorced and no longer involved in the child’s life, or in some cases, wishes to continue access and visitation. This process can be very stressful however my experience for over 30 years will provide a solid basis of legal analysis and a practical approach to the process of obtaining or dispensing with the consent of the absent biological parent.
